The FINANCIAL — On March 4, 2008 Georgian Airways, Georgia’s national carrier, awarded the winners of the Aviator contest. The ceremony was held at the Youth Palace.
According to Georgian Airways, Georgia’s national carrier, more than a hundred children have taken part in the contest ‘Aviator’, a children’s competition in modelling aircrafts.
The model had to have been accomplished by one student or group of students, a maximum of five children per airplane model. If a group of children worked on the model, then the prize was GEL 1 000 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. If a child worked individually on a model which won 1st place, then the prize was a computer.Besides prizes for the winners, all participants received a diploma.
“From the start of my career with Georgian Airways my intention always was not only to do good PR for the company, but also to promote Georgian aviation in general. It’s a very interesting sphere and should be popularized,” Nino Giorgobiani, author of the competition idea and PR Manager of Georgian Airways, told the FINANCIAL.
Contestants were free in choosing the material for their models, but the criteria were as follows: quality and accomplishment, design, similarity to a real aircraft, artistry, technique and innovation. The children created some very interesting models, some of them made paper airplanes, some used iron as a material, and there were many other forms as well.
“The project was primarily targeted at drawing the interest of youth and kids toward aviation. By means of the aviator contest the participants will find answers to the questions: what’s aviation? How’s the field developed and operated? How promising is the aviation future? We’re committed to reveal the talents and pave the way to those youth who have special interest toward the field. In order to run successful business it’s essential to share the know-how of the aviation activities with the young generation”, Tamaz Gaiashvili, the Director of Georgian Airways Board of Directors told the FINANCIAL.
Q. Did you expect that impressive feedback?
A. To be honest, I wasn’t that optimistic as lately I felt a bit disappointed feeling that aviation was no priority in the country. Though, fortunately, I was wrong as it appeared to be impossible to lose the respect to the 80 years of tradition that Georgia’s been known in this business. We do have the young generation full of patriotism to the country and they do present the prosperous future of the aviation.
Q. Do you intend to make Aviator an annual contest?
A. Certainly we do intend to take intensive care of the contest in future and do carry out lost of other events contributing to making the youth get engaged in aviation. We- the representatives of Georgia’s aviation will never let the long rooted traditions vanish.
Q. As a head of the leading airways in the country, would you say these type of contents will contribute to the international expansion of the sector as well?
A. again, my answer is positive. We need young generation to be involved in the current developments. During the last few years the number of aviators has significantly decreased. In case the tendency’s continued, the country might be left without pilots and eventually- without aviation. Contests like the Aviator is the next best opportunity for the youth to get the subsequent knowledge in order to get engaged the local and international aviation in service.
