(Tbilisi, Georgia) Due to the 150th anniversary of Italian Unity, the Italian Embassy in Georgia in cooperation with the State Museum of Theatre, Music, Cinema and Choreography of Georgia, held an exhibition – Italy in Georgia: a Millenary Dialogue at Europe House in Tbilisi.
The exhibition, organized by the Embassy of Italy, gathers items from the old Roman Empire, modern Italy and monarchical Italy. Costumes, set designs, old Italian coins and many other interesting items like manuscripts and letters, among which are those of Giuseppe Verdi and Federico Fellini, are being represented in the exhibition hall at European House.
Exhibition guests have the opportunity to see different miniatures like illustrated manuscripts and paintings as well.
“The 150th anniversary of Italian Unity is celebrated in different parts of the world. Georgia is a very important country for us and we thought much about organizing this project. With this exhibition we wanted to show people how we share cultural relationships,” said Italian Ambassador Vittorio Sandalli.
“At the moment relations towards Italy and Georgia are quite active both on the institutional and economic as well as cultural and social sights: a lively and versatile reality that renews contact with the past and encourages us to continue this millenary dialogue into the future with more vigour and enthusiasm,” Sandalli said.
“We decided not to hold any ordinary ceremony, but something very special and important for us. It means that the exhibits prove how deep and old the relationships between Georgia and Italy are. This exhibition will be open to society so that they may easily visit and see the different exhibits,”Sandalli said.
At the press conference organized specially for media representatives in terms of the exhibition, the Italian Ambassador introduced journalists with the new Culture Attaché of the Embassy Nicoleta Daga. As Sandalli says in the frames of the exhibition Georgian ballerina Nino Ananiashvili, Director of the Tbilisi Opera, was awarded the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity.
“President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano awarded Nino Ananiashvili, artistic director of the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre and international ballet star, with the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity. The Order is awarded for remarkable achievements in the fields of art, culture, science and sociology, and for significant share in developing relations and friendship between nations,” Sandalli said.
“Your extraordinary artistic career and tireless work as artistic director of the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre is a subject of great impression for the Italian people and great incentive to the relations between the Italian and Georgian nations, uniting and strengthening ties between them,” the Vittorio Sandalli letter to Nino Ananiashvili says.
The awarding ceremony took place in Tbilisi on March 16. Italian Ambassador Vittorio Sandalli, an audience of representatives of Georgian institutions, which included the Foreign Minister, Minister of Culture and Mayor of the city, scholars and enthusiasts, as well as the Italian community in Georgia, and Georgian media attended the event.
“It’s very important for us to take part in this exhibition, because many famous Georgian painters, public figures, famous, and world-known Italian opera singers’ expositions, manuscripts will be exhibited for the first time in the exhibition hall. I can easily say that these are 151 artefacts of national means and world level. People who visit the exhibition at European House will experience a journey in to the Italian-Georgian world,” said Giorgi Kalandia, head of the Museum.
“A very creative group has worked hard to select the best artefacts for the exhibition. It was a great pleasure for me to work with them. Generally the exhibition is a great supporter of cooperation between the diplomatic mission and cultural institutions,”Kalandia said.
