The FINANCIAL – According to RIA Novosti, The leader of Georgia's opposition Labor Party, Shalva Natelashvili, will run for the presidency in January, the party's secretary general said on November 12.
"The decision was made in response to the challenge launched by the incumbent Georgian president, Mikheil Saakashvili," Iosif Shatberashvili said.
Natelashvili will soon make an official announcement on his candidacy for the elections, set for January 5, 2008, the secretary general said.
Natelashvili's whereabouts following last week's mass street protests in Tbilisi, which were broken up by riot police on November 7, remain unknown.
