The FINANCIAL — Kobuleti became an elite resort in the second half of the XIX century. The first mention of this place concerned only the coastal part, which according to the direction of the Russian Emperor Alexander II was given as a present to the best Commander-in-Chiefs, who showed themselves in the Russian-Turkish campaign.
Influential high-ranking officials soon appreciated the value of the gift and started to build luxury villas there, where they spent summer and winter vacations together with their family members.
Not long after the healing power of the Kobuleti climate became well-known throughout the vast Russian Empire. Spending at least two days there was a sign of belonging to high society. They were not only speaking, but also writing about the resort. As a testimony to this, are numerous articles in the most popular newspaper of the time “Kavkaz”, where famous scientists and doctors Pantyukhov and Peredelskiy wrote about the unique climate of the place. They refer to Kobuleti as “Smekalovka” (the name of the Russian settlement) or “Russian Riviera”. Along with this they refer to the words of doctor Preobrazhenskiy and professor Sherbakov, who asserted that the Kobuleti climate benefits the cardiovascular and nervous systems as well as respiratory organs.
During the period of the Soviet Union, luxury villas of the aristocrats were passed to the “red commissars”. One of the best summer-cottages, with an ideal location, became the property of Lavrentiy Beria, Governor of the Caucasus region. Soon after his move to Moscow, his summer-cottage was transformed into a sanatorium which was named “Sakartvelo” (Georgia). The sanatorium became one of the most prestigious places of recreation for the elected representatives of science, movies, theatre and the arts.
Nowadays in place of sanatorium Sakartvelo there is a modern, luxury 5 star spa-hotel “Georgia Palace”, which since the day of its opening has hosted hundreds of famous people.
Kobuleti is situated just 20 minutes from Batumi Airport. One of the main factors creating the unique climate of the town, together with the sea and mountains, is Ispani Mire which is exclusively fed by rainwater. The mire is like an upside down lake that is covered by a 25-45 cm thick layer of living Sphagnum. A large number of endemic, relict, rare and endangered plant species are found here. The dominant Sphagnum imbricatum is very sensitive to environmental pollution and has become rare worldwide. Mires function as a sort of global cooling device: they guard humans and other wildlife against global warming and resulting changes. That is why Ispani Mire is on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. And one of the most important events in “Georgia Palace Hotel” history was hosting the 41st Ramsar Standing Committee in April 2010.
