The FINANCIAL — Germany warned of further sanctions against Russia in the event of renewed violence in Ukraine after Western leaders discussed the Ukraine crisis in a teleconference on March 3, according to Nasdaq.
The leaders of Germany, the U.S., France, Italy, the U.K., and the European Council noted during the teleconference that there had been “positive developments” in implementing the cease-fire and weapons withdrawal called for in the peace deal reached in Minsk, Belarus, on Feb. 12, a spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel said.
But he added that the West would maintain pressure on Russia to implement the broader peace agreements that were reached in Minsk last September, tying sanctions against Russia to whether or not all steps called for in those agreements were taken, according to Nasdaq.
“The conversation partners pointed to the close connection between the sanctions and the implementation of the Minsk Accord,” the spokesman for Ms. Merkel said in a statement after the teleconference. “This means that sanctions will only be lifted after the complete implementation of the Minsk Agreements. At the same time, they emphasized that they would be prepared for further sanctions measures in the case of a renewed escalation.”
Ms. Merkel’s spokesman didn’t elaborate on what sort of sanctions the West would be prepared to enact.
