The FINANCIAL — On June 7 the renewed museum of Kote Marjanishvili in Kvareli was opened, where producer, establisher of the theatre and one of the most significant Georgian cultural figures of the 20th century Kote Marjanishvili was born and brought up.
The museum was restored by the charitable fund Tsiskari, supported by the Development Company Redix and Bank Republic group Société Générale.
Restoration was realized on the basis of archive photo materials and lasted about one year. The house of Marjanishvili, being in the gravest condition, was completely restored and renovated as it originally looked. (Architect: G. Sosanidze). Meanwhile, exposition of the museum was completely changed. It was enriched, perfected and arranged thematically in the following way:
• In the first room the activity of Marjanishvili in Georgia, Russia and Ukraine is shown;
• The next room is given to the play “Uriel Akosta”, which is already 80 years old – there is a small stage, a model of decoration and suits in this room;
• Separately there is an exposition of the aristocratic life of the 19th century.
• The historical cellar of the house, where Kote Marjanishvili used to stage small performances.
Special place at the museum is given for the memorial objects of Kote Marjanishvili’s sister, nun Tamar Marjanishvili. Tamar carried out her activity first in Georgia (in Bodbe), and then in Russia. She is considered to be a remarkable figure in the history of the church.
The author and steward of the exposition concept is Davit Tskhadadze.
There is large monitor installed in the museum, where shots from plays and films of Kote Marjanishvili are shown. There are also the works of Elene Akhvlediani, Lado Gudiashvili, photos of remarkable figures of Georgian theatre and cinema, patterns of decorative-applied arts, manuscripts, letters, etc.
All of this lends a special charm to the Marjanishvili museum and makes it much more attractive for visitors. The renewed museum enlivens the life of the XIX-XX centuries and one of the greatest families of the era, the history of worthy children of Georgia.
The Marjanishvili museum will work accordingly to the principles of cultural centre: active and interesting for all generations. The museum complex will become a unique object of history of the Georgian theatre: original “Theatric Mosque”, which will entertain a lot of Georgian and foreign travellers and tourist groups. A lot of projects are planned for the theatre. Specially favoured is the idea of first-year students of the Theatrical University, restoring the traditions of “christening”, which was carried out right in the cellar of the house for years.
Additionally, according to the initiative of Mr. Lasha Papashvili, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Bank Republic – Group Société Générale, General director of the Development Company Redix, the best plays will annually be awarded with “Duruji” (in 1924 association-corporation “Duruji” was established at the Rustaveli Theatre, where Kote Marjanishvili was elected as the chairman).
