The FINANCIAL — There’s little doubt that tourism to Rome from Argentina will benefit from the election of the country’s, and continent’s first pope. But what of travel to the homeland of Pope Francis?
According to the UK’s Guardian, a Vatican spokesperson said it was hoped that the new pontiff’s first trip abroad would be to his homeland, which would undoubtedly bring with it a huge influx of visitors from across Argentina and Latin America.
But beyond that, there could also be interest in retracing the steps of Pope Francis, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who was born and raised in Buenos Aires, according to e-Travel Blackboard.
With Pope John Paul II, there was significant interest in walking in his footsteps in Poland, where he was born. So, who’s to say the same won’t happen once this pope becomes a little better known?
Aerolineas Argentinas Regional Manager of Australia and New Zealand told e-Travel Blackboard that the announcement of the new pope was "great news for our country”.
“We hope that the new appointment of the pope from Argentina generates more interest in our country and works as a link between Australia and Argentina, helping to increase the number for customers traveling there," he said.
“Argentina is a great destination for the Australian market and now this is another great reason to go and visit Buenos Aires, the town of the new pope and chance to visit South American Continent".
