Winners of the competition,who received money prizes in the amount of EUR 5000, 3000 and 1500from HeidelbergCement, were announced at the Ceremony.
The event was attended by Khatuna Gogaladze, the Minister of Environment Protection of Georgia, Michael Hampel, General Director of HeidelbergCement, AkakiChkhaidze, Sales and Marketing Director and employees of the Company, Jury members, 5 candidates moved to the second stage, representatives of the environmental NGOs and professors of ecology and natural science faculties from various state universities.
Prize Winning Places got allocated as follows:
I Place -Maia Akhalkatsi – Educational Program on Biodiversity Conservation: Lime Quarry Rehabilitation Process (Kavtiskhevi Quarry)
II Place- ShamilShetekauri – Research of HEIDELBERGCEMENT Quarries Biodiversity and Compiling a Colored Illustrated Book (Gardabani, Kavtiskhevi and Dedophlistskaro Quarries)
III Place: NanuliKhosroshvili – Quarry Oasis (Kavtiskhevi Quarry)
TamazJikia – Preserving – Increasing Biodiversity on Eroded Surfaces and Landscape Restoration (Kavtiskhevi Quarry)
Eka Melitskauri – Observation over Unique Habitats of Birds in an Online Regime (Kavtiskhevi Quarry)
AkakiChkhaidze, Sales and Marketing Director, HeidelbergCement: “In last December the Company launched a new project aimed at facilitating biodiversity at quarries. Any student, professor, scientist and schoolar could submit its project proposal. The contest was held simultaneously in 18 countries and I would like to note that Georgia was distinguished by the highest activity among the participant states. Approximately 53 projects were received for review. We selected 5 best and they moved to the second stage, which implies that they will take part in international contest in Brussels.”
Khatuna Gogaladze, the Minister of Environment Protection of Georgia: “It is a very positive fact that private sector takes interest in environmental issues. Such research projects will contribute to deepening the knowledge about biological values of quarries, implementation of projects in this field and development of biodiversity. In my opinion, the Contest Quarry Life Award gave us a unique opportunity to increase environmental and educational values of quarries.”
HeidelbergCement announced the Contest – Quarry Life Award („Facilitating Biodiversity at Quarries” )on December 15, 2011. This contest,aiming at facilitating the biodiversity ,was simultaneously held in 18 countries. The contest consisted of two stages – submission of idea and project report. Students and scholars had the opportunity to take part in the contest on an individual basis as well as in groups. Deadline for submission of proposals was February 17, 2012. According to the international statistics, Georgia showed the best results and took the leader’s position by received 53 projects. The National Jury identified 5 best projects on March 5 that moved to the next stage. Authors of selected projects submitted their final reports at the end of September. Winners at the national level will be announced by the Jury on November 20. Projects, selected in each country, will simultaneously be reviewed in Belgium at global contest.
