The FINANCIAL — Marking International Women’s Day, March 8, the Eurasian Harm Reduction Network (EHRN) concluded the first year of its Women Against Violence, developed under the framework of an EU-funded project – ‘Strengthening the response of non-state actors to growing needs of women who use drugs’.
Under the slogan ‘Break the silence’, the campaign sought to raise awareness about police violence against women who use drugs by mobilizing women and building their capacity to document police violence. In total, 850 cases of police violence were submitted through a special online platform. The majority of cases (494) came from Ukraine, with 155 from Russia. In most cases, women complained about threats and intimidation, physical violence, ill treatment, blackmail and unjustified arrest.
The second year of the campaign aims to build dialogue between women who use drugs and decision makers and other stakeholders, in order to create effective solutions in reducing police violence, according to EU Neighbourhood Info Centre.
