The FINANCIAL — Cold weather can often be the root cause of maintenance problems around the home and a new survey conducted by the AA revealed that 22% of householders had a domestic disaster last winter, costing them on average £555.56 to fix.
To combat these costs, the AA has launched Home Membership; a set of products aimed at helping homeowners with emergency and routine repairs around the home – from tripping electrics to broken boilers.
The most common type of fault in the home was central heating-related, accounting for 58% of all repairs. The second most common was a leaky roof (15%), followed closely by blocked drains (10%) and damp (10%), according to the survey.
“Even relatively minor jobs can actually be quite expensive, once you add call–out charges and labour. With AA Home Membership, we want to help take the hassle and expense out of organising these routine repairs at what is often a busy time of year,” said Tom Stringer, Head of AA Home Membership.
As autumn draws near and temperatures drop, Mr Stringer believes the change could potentially leave central heating systems and plumbing vulnerable.
“Our research showed that, by far the most common thing to go wrong in the home was the boiler or central heating. While we can't control the weather, we can put adequate protection in place to take away the pain of organising costly repairs, with the same excellent AA service you get at the roadside,” he said.
