The FINANCIAL — Huawei on March 28 announced the successful demonstration of the world 1st 32-wavelength 10G WDM-PON (wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network) prototype at the Optical Fiber Communications Conference and Exposition (OFC) 2016 in Anaheim.
The prototype can improve single fiber bandwidth capacity to 320G, and provides high security, high reliability, and low latency / jitter exclusive wavelength channels to users. It is appropriate to wireless fronthaul, business 10GE leased Line services.
This prototype is developed based on Huawei Next Generation Large Capacity NG-OLT MA5800 platform, greatly enhances the single fiber access data capacity, with higher application value. It can support single fiber 32 waves, each wave with 10GE ability and break through the limit of traditional WDM-PON, which need different optical module, high cost, complicated construction, difficult maintenance etc.
Traditional WDM-PON system use fixed wavelength optical module, which lead to a lot of optical modules, so inventory is very complex. Huawei WDM-PON introduces an innovative technology, normalize 32 models of optical modules to one type, helps operators to significantly reduce operation and maintenance cost. Meanwhile, against traditional WDM-PON fixed wavelength optical modules low port density and complex fiber connection problems, Huawei WDM-PON use innovative and highly integrated packaging technology to achieve a single PON port maximum 320G bandwidth, according to Huawei.
In addition, With the widespread deployment of LTE / 4.5G and rapid development of 4K / 8K video, cloud computing, the wireless fronthaul service, business leased line service have strict requirement of delay and jitter, it will increase the cost of hardware. In order to effectively satisfy different requirements of different services, WDM-PON OLT and ONU through innovative hardware design, without changing the optical modules and hardware, by loading different software, can support leased line service or wireless fronthaul service. Greatly enhance the equipment management, operation and maintenance efficiency.
In 2015, Huawei and a Chinese operator jointly completed the industry’s first WDM-PON & XG-PON hybrid network field trial. WDM-PON provides 10GE/GE leased line service to small and medium enterprises in industrial park. In OFC 2016 Huawei launched the prototype, and released 2 key technical papers, the paper regarding “256-Gb/s CPRI mobile fronthaul transmission” reports the demonstration of 256-Gb/s CPRI-equivalent data rate by using 10-GHz-bandwidth optical components, showing a major step forward in supporting future 4.5G and 5G mobile fronthaul via high cost-efficiency optical access networks. The paper regarding “Efficient Mobile Fronthaul for 128×128 MIMO” reports a new method to realize mobile fronthual for the massive MIMO scenario with both high bandwidth-efficiency and high cost-efficiency, contributing to the emerging field of fiber/wireless converged networks.
