The FINANCIAL — UKRAINE. The State Statistics Service considers the increases in the prices of foodstuffs as the main factor responsible for inflation in 2010.
The State Statistics Service’s First Deputy Chairman Vadym Pischeiko announced this in an interview in the Dilova Stolytsia publication.
«Definitely, [the main factor responsible for inflation in 2010] was the increases in the prices of foodstuffs. Tariffs were practically not raised last year; household appliances and electronics became cheaper,» he said.
At the same time, according to him, the increases in the prices of foodstuffs in 2010 did not result in a significant increase in the rate of inflation at the end of the year.
«One of the reasons why the increases in the prices of foodstuffs did not yield an excessively serious effect is the limited purchasing power of citizens. If they spent more on food ion 2010, then they had less money left for other goods and services. Accordingly, the cost of part of these goods and services reduced, creating a balance,» he said.
He suggested that increases in the tariffs for housing and utility services would cause an increase in the rate of inflation in 2011.
He denied the suggestion that the inflation index is not calculated objectively or calculated under pressure from the authorities.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the inflation rates in Ukraine were 9.1% in 2010 (0.8% in December), 12.3% in 2009, and 22.3% in 2008.
