The FINANCIAL — Iran must meet international agreements about its nuclear activities before any sanctions are lifted – announced the EU Monday, writes EU Business web-edition.
This statement was made after Tehran said the UN could supervise the programme if sanctions are removed.
"Iran still has to comply with its international obligations, despite today's announcement," Michael Mann, spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, told AFP.
Ashton has made a "concrete proposal" to Iran aimed at building confidence over the aims of its atomic programme, Mann said.
"Unfortunately, so far, Iran has not taken up this offer to enter into meaningful talks," Mann said.
The United Nations has imposed a series of sanctions against Iran over its refusal to halt its uranium enrichment activities, which Western nations fear hide a bid to build a nuclear bomb, remarks online edition.
Tehran denies the charges, arguing that it is solely trying to produce energy for civilian use.
"Existing UNSC (UN Security Council) Resolutions foresee the lifting of sanctions once confidence has been re-established," Mann said.
Iran's nuclear chief, Fereydoun Abbasi Davani, said on Monday that Iran was ready to give the International Atomic Energy Agency "full supervision" of its nuclear programme for five years if the UN sanctions are lifted.
