The FINANCIAL — “The independence of the State of Israel has reached its 60 year anniversary. Since independence the Israeli people have kept up the daily fight for state status, though notwithstanding all the obstacles faced, the country’s independence has been strongly maintained,” declared Shatbai Tsur, the Ambassador of the State of Israel to Georgia.
On May 8, 2008, the Israeli Embassy in Georgia celebrated its 60 year jubilee. The extravagant event held at the Triumph club, Tbilisi was attended by honorary guests: his holiness Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II, Vladimir Gurgenidze- the Prime Minister of Georgia, Ekaterine Tkeshelashvili- the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Eduard Shevardnadze- the former Georgian President. The celebration was hosted by Shatbai Tsur, the Ambassador of the State of Israel to Georgia.
“Relations between Georgia and Israel are being intensified in all directions: economy, culture, education, medicine and investments in tourism,” said the Ambassador.
The unofficial part of the event was continued with a concert of famous Georgian singers. A special song, dedicated to the independence day of Israel, was presented during the concert.
“The U.S.A was the first state to acknowledge the independence of the State of Israel. We have very good relations with the local embassy and hope the tendency will be continued in future,” John Tefft, the U.S Ambassador to Georgia, told The FINANCIAL.
“We work very closely with the Israeli embassy in Georgia and I can recall only welcome developments from dealing with Israeli diplomats,” Ertan Tezgor, the Turkish Ambassador to Georgia, told The FINANCIAL.
Bilateral agreements between Israel and Georgia include: Technical Cooperation, Cooperation in the field of Telecommunications and Posts, Cooperation in the field of Agriculture, Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investments, Agreement in the field of Tourism, Cooperation in the fields of Education, Science and Culture, Air Transport Agreement.
Diplomatic relations between Israel and Georgia were established in June 1992.
The two countries maintain diplomatic relations at the level of ambassadors. The two countries have the following diplomatic-consular missions: Georgia has its embassy in Tel Aviv, and the State of Israel has its embassy in Tbilisi.
Since December 2004 H.E. Shabtai Tsur has been the Ambassador of Israel to Georgia.
