The FINANCIAL — “Algeria, at the crossroads of Africa and Europe, is a mainstay of stability in the Euro-Mediterranean region and a major partner of PACE”, Jean-Claude Mignon, PACE President, emphasised following a three-day visit to the country (17-19 June 2013).
“The Parliamentary Assembly places a high importance on enhancement of co-operation with the Maghreb countries, and I invite Algeria to intensify its exchanges with the Council of Europe, particularly regarding suppression of terrorism, illegal immigration, trafficking in human beings, development of intercultural dialogue and environmental conservation,” said Mr Mignon, who proposed to the Algerian authorities that other agreements be made with specific Council of Europe agencies, in particular the North-South Centre, and more benefit derived from the experience of the Venice Commission, of which Algeria has been a member since 2007.
“I reminded those whom I spoke to that it would be advantageous for them to request Partner for Democracy status with the PACE, in order to offer Algerian parliamentarians – who already attend the Assembly sessions – the possibility of fully participating in the debates on matters of common interest,” the President added.
“I especially welcome the commitment of the Algerian President and authorities to gender equality and the advancement of women in political and economic life. Women’s representation in Parliament is among the highest in the countries on both sides of the Mediterranean,” he added.
Jean-Claude Mignon also commended the authorities for their determination to invite international observers to monitor the presidential election scheduled next year, and to take account of any comments they might make. In addition, during his meetings he addressed the situation in Syria, Libya and the Western Sahara, according to Council of Europe.
