The FINANCIAL — It was on 7 March 1986 that Bank Julius Baer set up an entity in Geneva, with the creation of Société Bancaire Julius Baer SA.
In 25 years, it has built up a strong presence in the city. This has been achieved through a number of measures, including the successful integration of Ferrier Lullin & Cie SA in 2005 and, more recently, that of ING in 2010. With more than 400 employees in Geneva, Julius Baer is today one of the major players in the field of private banking in this financial centre.
Société Bancaire de Genève was established in 1934. During the 1950s, it was sold to a handful of shareholders, including the Lawi family, who retained a notable presence within the establishment during the thirty years of growth that followed. In 1985, an initial capital shareholding of 40% was sold to the then Baer Holding and, one year later, Société Bancaire Julius Baer SA was set up, with the Group holding a stake of 51%.
Its Geneva entity enabled Julius Baer to carry out a whole range of developments and achieve synergies, not only with regard to clients, investment opportunities and transactions, but also in terms of investment funds, credits and staff training. The main development milestones have been the successful integration of Ferrier Lullin & Cie SA in 2005 and, more recently, that of ING in 2010, which brought the number of employees to over 400. Today, Julius Baer focuses exclusively on private banking, which now forms its sole activity both in Geneva and throughout the rest of the Group.
According to Rémy Bersier, member of the Executive Board of Bank Julius Baer and CEO Romandie, Francophone Markets, Africa, Monaco, “today, Geneva is one of the development pillars of Julius Baer within the framework of its international and domestic strategy. We devote ourselves fully to the interests of our clients, working from our two prestigious addresses at rue Pierre-Fatio 7 and avenue de Frontenex 30.” With fifteen offices throughout Switzerland, including five in Western Switzerland, the proximity that Julius Baer has to its clients nationwide is unrivalled for a private bank.
