The FINANCIAL — “Aesthetic surgery is the surgery of beauty,” says Professor Iva Kuzanov, Kuzanov Clinic.
Aesthetic surgery includes rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, auriculoplasty, the improvement of rough scars from a previous operation as well as post-traumatic, face lift, breast augmentation and reduction, liposuction as well as abdominal plastic surgery.
As Kuzanov declared, out of all the aesthetic surgery available, the most demanded operation at the clinic, as well as in the whole of Georgia, is rhinoplasty. At Kuzanov Clinic rhinoplasty contributes to approximately a 60-70% share of total aesthetic surgical operations undertaken. Moreover, on average 500 rhinoplasty operations are done at the clinic annually.
“Rhinoplasty is divided into aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. In aesthetic surgery we aim to make noses more beautiful. However, as a rule doing an operation on a nose includes work on the bone, cartilage as well as skin. The credo of our clinic is to make the new nose fit the patient’s face and for there to be no obvious signs of the operation. In the past two-three years we are proud to say we have managed not to leave any signs of operation from doing rhinoplasty,” Kuzanov declared.
“Reconstructive rhinoplasty is done when surgery has been done two or more times and there is nothing left of the original nose, neither bone nor cartilage. In such a case we have to recover and create the whole nose. We take cartilage from the patient’s ribs and ears and create a skeleton of the nose, and then apply the skin,” Kuzanov added.
“Rhinoplasty is quite a serious and difficult operation. Operations have slightly improved over recent years. Until recently operations were done via closed method, at present we use open method under general anaesthetic, when the skin is wholly raised from the area. Under such conditions, you can see the whole anatomy of the nose and model it better, later replacing the skin,” said Kuzanov.
Rhinoplasty surgery lasts from 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the specifics of the case. The rehabilitation process is 5 to 6 months.
Q. Face Lifting is one of the directions of aesthetic surgery. What are the procedures of this surgery and from how many years old is it recommended to have a face lift?
A. Usually face lifts under narcosis are done on men and women from the age of 40-45 up. However I would advise having a face lift after 55 only as it would bring about better results. However a face lift can be done at any age depending on the patient and reason for the lift.
When the patient first arrives for a pre-surgical consultation we ask them what result they expect from the operation; how much prettier or younger they would like to look for example. We then do the operation based on the desire of the patient.
The operation is done under narcosis, the skin is wholly raised around the eyebrows, nose and mouth contours and that way surgical removal of wrinkles, circular face lifting, and lifting of the upper third of the face is done. The skin is lifted and the patient is generally left looking 10-15 years younger after the operation.
Women consist of 75% of those who have face lifts done at our clinic, while the rest are men. The majority of patients who go for our face lift procedure lead an actively social life, such as lecturers, artists or those in the public eye.
Q. Please describe the lip surgery types and procedures available at Kuzanov Clinic.
A. Lip surgery includes augmentation and changing the form of the lips. There are two methods of lip surgery. The first includes a constant surgery method when hypodermic cells are taken from the body’s skin and put under the lips. Thus the lips get a form and remain that way.
The second is the use of fillers, which is a bio liquid and is injected in to the lips. The lip’s form lasts for 6-8 months. The advantage of a filler is that it is not permanent and in case the patient does not like the effect, the substance will dry up after six months.
In the past silicone used to be inserted in to lips in Georgia, which was a disaster. We have seen at least 20-25 patients who had previously had silicone inserted in to their lips and we have had to do enormous operations to take the silicone out and recreate the lips using their own cells.
Q. How popular is liposuction at the clinic?
A. Liposuction is quite a popular operation at the clinic mainly done on the thigh area. Liposuction is a brilliant method of contour plastics; the operation is not done to lose weight but rather to reach a desired body shape. Liposuction can be done wherever an individual likes, including breast, hand, and hips.
Q. What are the main reasons of fat accumulation in the body of an individual?
A. This is mainly due to one’s genetic background as well as ethnicity.
We would advise women not to become obese, but to always strive to be at their most beautiful and in-shape. Great attention should be paid first and foremost to leading a healthy life. An individual should wake up early and go to bed early also, must eat small portions three times a day before 6 o’clock in the evening. After that time eating is generally forbidden. Moreover, physical exercise is essential. If an individual is not that physically active in terms of exercises or the gym, they should at least walk at a brisk 6 kilometres a day. If a woman adopts these practices, she will always be at her most fit and elegant.
At the other end of the spectrum you find young girls of 19-20 who weigh more than 100 kilos. That is a disease and requires surgery. There is a catastrophic increase of obesity in people in the world as well as in Georgia
Q. How often do women come to the clinic for surgery on their abdomens?
A. Abdominal plastic surgery is quite common with women who have had 2-3 children already or have given birth by Caesarean section. We do abdominal surgery using only new technologies, and women are left with an even better looking abdomen than they had at the age of 18. Only a small scar is left which is virtually invisible.
Q. Breast augmentation and reduction is one of the directions at your clinic. How popular is this surgery amongst Georgians?
A. Breast augmentation is actually the most popular operation at the clinic. A silicone implant has been technologically developed which does not have any effect on the organism, is not contraindicated and allows for the making of any size of breast. A breast operation can be done in an hour, and the next day the individual can leave the clinic. Later, over the next 1-2 month process of rehabilitation the individual must wear a special support bra though.
There are two types of breast reconstruction. The first is aesthetic, when the breast (usually post pregnancy or breastfeeding) is saggy, and we lift the breast and make it pretty again. The second is reconstructive, when due to amputation of the breast because of cancer we restore the complete breast with new flesh and skin taken from elsewhere on the patient’s body, or use top-quality implants. There are up to five different methods of breast reconstruction that we use.
