The FINANCIAL — Caucasus School of Law has launched a new Law Masters Program (LL.M) in international business law. According to Zviad Gabisonia, PhD, while the LL.M in international business law is a novelty for Georgian legal education, it is the most popular LL.M program in universities of the United States, Great Britain, Germany and France.
International Business Law Specialists are regarded well-paid lawyers in the US and EU countries as well as countries of the former Soviet Union. The employment level of the lawyers of this sphere exceeds the employment level of lawyers from any other field. In the United States 92% of international business law specialists are employed, in EU Countries – 88%, in Post Soviet Countries – more than 80%. The percentage is increasing year by year.
“This program is different, not only from the masters programs of other Georgian law schools but also from the masters programs of CSL. The number of subjects students have to study per semester are not fixed in advance. Of course there is a minimal standard of passing at least 2 subjects every semester. Going through this program is quite a challenge, not only because of the high demands we set our students, but also because the subjects themselves are very complex and sophisticated,” said Gabisonia.
Launched in 2005 CSL is a Caucasus University school. Equipment, modules, curriculums, syllabuses, and the student evaluation system of the school are in accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and rules of European Credit Transfer System ECTS. The main partners of CSL are Georgia State University’s Law School (Atlanta, Georgia, USA) and University of Chester, where one CSL student is actually currently studying. Her education is being fully covered by CU.
Besides international business law CSL offers LL M programs in corporate law, banking and insurance law, commercial law, tax law, international law, administrative law, criminal law, constitutional law, and public and informational law.
LL.M in international business law costs USD 9 000, while all other programs cost USD 6 000.
The LL.M course at CSL is based on a three semester principle and includes 120 credits. Duration of study lasts from two to five years. According to CSL representatives, foreign experts will conduct specialized workshops throughout the study period. In the near future a Dual LL.M will be launched in cooperation with US and EU Universities.
International business law students are to study comparative business law, comparative civil law, international labour and employment law, economics, management, comparative property law, comparative intellectual property law, comparative contracts law, comparative corporate law, international banking law, comparative insurance law, corporate management, investment and comparative tax law, international economic law, securities law, international commercial and financial law, law of civil procedure, and international commercial arbitration. Students also have to obtain a passing grade for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). The LL.M in international business law will be lead by professor Zviad Gabisonia.
“The CSL LL.M program in international business law is designed to serve the rapidly expanding and highly competitive business sector in Georgia,” said Kakha Shengelia, President of CU.
“Caucasus School of law has been operating for only three years, however, 40% of our 20 third year students are already employed. Today a memorandum of cooperation will be presented to the representatives of governmental structures, NGOs, leading business companies and law firms. Consequently employment opportunities for our students will grow considerably,” said Lili Bibilashvili, Director of the Career Development Centre at CU.
“Our school is mainly oriented on business law which is natural, given that Caucasus School of Law was established on the basis of Caucasus School of Business. Our ultimate goal is to become a leading institution in the business law education area and we have been taking significant steps to this end,” said Zaza Maruashvili, Dean of the Caucasus School of Law. “Our strategy is to facilitate our students with not only deep theoretical knowledge but also with practical skills, which they are going to utilize in their sphere of activity. Schools at CU are operating in close cooperation with one another. Starting from 2008, CSL students will have the opportunity to take subjects that are being taught at Caucasus School of Business or Caucasus School of Media.”
