The FINANCIAL — LSE has recorded an outstanding season in sport, winning premierships in four different sports in the London-based university league competition (LUSL) as well as jumping 15 places in the national British University College Sport (BUCS) league as a result of numerous promotions, according to LSE.
Highlights of the season included clean sweeps by the men’s and women’s squash 1st teams both winning their BUCS and LUSL Premier leagues this season, along with premiership wins by LSE’s football men’s 1st team, the badminton mixed team and the mixed hockey 1st team.
The School has risen in the BUCS points tables this year as a result of strong performances notably from men’s tennis 1st and 2nd teams, mixed golf 1st team, women’s badminton 1st team, men’s volleyball 1st team, men’s badminton 3rd team, women’s hockey 2nd team and men’s football 3rd team, all who have been promoted to higher divisions.
Three of LSE’s netball and football teams have also been promoted in the LUSL following strong wins in recent weeks.
The achievements cement LSE’s growing reputation in sport and justify the School’s recent investment in its talented student athletes via the Sports Ambassador Scholarship Scheme, according to LSE.
The success of the Sports Ambassador program has paved the way for an additional £15,000 grant from LSE’s Annual Fund to create a Focus Team Project to support the School’s top performing teams.
“We have a number of very successful teams who deserve additional support, so we are investing time and funding in their coaches, fitness classes, sports psychology and sports nutrition seminars, aerial filming technology for tactics sessions, as well as new equipment and training kit,” LSE’s Sports Development Coordinator, Natasha Cabral, said.
“The criteria is simple: teams must have a desire to improve and excel,” she added.
LSE has also applied to Sport England for funds to develop a new recreational programme within the School to expand the current fitness opportunities beyond a state-of-the-art gym and competitive BUCS and LUSL clubs.
“If successful in gaining the funding we will be launching brand new projects in October including inter-school leagues and tournaments, ‘drop in’ sessions, beginner courses and one-off activities” she said.
