The FINANCIAL — The majority of Ukrainians do not believe into possibility of the country’s split into east and west. These are the results of a poll carried out by Gorshenin Institute within frames of its sociological study “Mass Media and Freedom of Speech”, and forwarded to UNIAN.
According to the results of the poll, only a third of Ukrainians (some 34.8%) believe that the problem of split of Ukraine into the eastern and western parts really exists. At the same time, some 42.8% of Ukrainians do not consider this problem real. However, the number of those who could not answer the question appeared to be rather high – some 22.5%.
According to the information of the institute, the poll confirmed that Ukraine is in fact a bilingual state – some 46.8% of those polled said they speak Russian at home, some 49.5% – Ukrainian, and some 2% – other languages.
The poll was carried out during October 20 – November 3 of the year 2008 in 129 settlements of Ukraine. On the whole, 2004 respondents were polled. The error margin does not exceed 2.4%.
