The FINANCIAL — Courtyard by Marriott Tbilisi hotel was the exclusive host of the Octoberfest in Georgia. From October 15 to October 28 Octoberfest fans are given the opportunity to become the part of the world’s largest beer festival ever.
“The renovated restaurant at the Courtyard by Marriott Tbilisi hotel is just the perfect fit for holding Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest typical menu consists of: beer, sausages, roast chicken, -these are the main items people enjoy most. While working at Munich hotel I happened to see what real Oktoberfest is about,” stated Dietmar Platz, F&B Director.
The Octoberfest tradition started in 1810 to celebrate 12th marriage of Bavarian Crown prince Ludwig to the Saxon- Hildburghausen Princess Therese. The citizens of Munich were invited to join the festivities, which were held over the five days on the fields in front of the city gates. The fields have been named Theresienwiesse “Theresa’s Fileds” in honor of the Crown Princess ever since, although the locals have since abbreviated the name simply to the “Wies’n”.
Anniversary celebrations were held annually thereafter that eventually became larger and more elaborate. Today the Oktoberfest is a 16 day festival held each year in Munich, Bavaria, Germany during late September and early October. It is one of the most famous events in the city and the world's largest fair, with some six million people attending every year.
“What people really like about the menu is the Bavarian Weisswurst, also roast pork neck. We have Georgian Kazbegi Beer on the menu as well in order to give people a choice. As for me, I don’t have a favorite item,” said Dietmar.
A special Oktoberfest beer is brewed for the occasion, which is slightly darker and stronger, in both taste and alcohol. It is served in a one-liter-tankard called Maß. The first mass is served to the Bavarian Prime Minister. Only local Munich breweries are allowed to serve this beer in a Bierzelt, a beer tent which is large enough for thousands.
Octoberfest menu includes items with prices starting as low as GEL 4- Brezel with butter up to GEL 35 Kupferberg Gold sparkling wine. (Plus a customary 18% VAT).
Last year Oktoberfest was held at the Café Parnas, Tbilisi Marriott hotel.
“As for Parnas Café we’ve just started running the Chocolate promotion as it’s more associated with nice drinks like cognacs, sweet flavors of cakes. Hence, Parnas concept wouldn’t go as well with Oktoberfest as the restaurant at Courtyard by Marriott Tbilisi does,” noted Platz.
According to Dietmar, Courtyard by Marriott Tbilisi hotel is the exclusive host of Oktoberfest in Georgia.
“I don’t think there’s ever been any other hotel in Georgia celebrating Oktoberfest,” said Platz.
