The FINANCIAL — BERLIN, A crash initially involving two cars led to a mass pileup of 259 cars and injured 66 people on a German freeway between Berlin and Hannover, German television reported on July 20.
The two vehicles were involved in an accident in heavy rain on a highway near the city of Lerthe on July 19 evening. After the collision, vehicles behind them began slamming into one another, pushing some off the road and creating a traffic jam some 30 kilometers long.
The section of the highway was closed to traffic until July 20 morning while 340 rescue workers cleared the road and helped the injured.
The freeway was reopened on July 20 morning.
