The FINANCIAL — Meeting between the President of Georgia H.E. Giorgi Margvelashvili and representatives of up to 20 opposition parties has ended with a concrete agreement on the constitutional amendments: on the basis of the majority’s request, the President will fully reflect the majority’s proposals in the veto.
In the veto, the President will repeat the “Georgian Dream’s” position on the transition to the proportional electoral system in 2020, according to the Administration of the President of Georgia.
As for the principle issue of changing the presidential election system, contradicted by the Georgian society; to deal with contradiction, the President, sharing the view of the Venice Commission, offers the ruling party to leave this issues to the bicameral parliament to decide in the future.
As noted at the meeting, it is important that the presented view is supported by the votes of the opposition in the Parliament. This means that the key positions of the “Georgian Dream” will be practiced in daily life and the Constitution will no longer be a one-party document. The same view is supported by the non-parliamentary opposition as well.
All these may lead to the advancement of the Georgian democracy to the European way of political discussion, compromise and consensus.
The meeting has also been attended by the Head of the Administration of the President Mr. Giorgi Abashishvili, Secretary of the National Security Council Mr. Davit Rakviashvili, Political Secretary of the President Ms. Pikria Chikhradze, and the Advisor to the President in Human Rights and Justice Issues Mr. Kakha Kozhoridze.
