The FINANCIAL — Within the framework of his official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany, Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze held a meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s foreign and security policy adviser Christoph Heusgen.
Discussions during the meeting focused on friendly and partner relations between Georgia and Germany in various areas. The Georgian Foreign Minister thanked the German side for Georgia’s support on European and Euro-Atlantic integration path emphasizing Berlin’s role in granting Georgia visa-free travel with the EU. For his part, Christoph Heusgen highlighted Georgia’s impressive progress and its fundamental transformation making Georgia a rightful member of the European family, according to MFA of Georgia.
The sides spoke about the issues of regional security. Mikheil Janelidze paid special attention to the Russian Federation’s steps taken towards annexation of Georgia’s Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions. Christoph Heusgen pledged Germany’s support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and highly appraised the Georgian Government’s policy directed towards peaceful resolution of the conflict, de-escalation of the situation and confidence-building measures between the communities torn apart by the war.
The sides highlighted the importance of celebrating the Georgia-Germany Friendship Year in terms of political and cultural rapprochement and the strengthening of people-to-people contacts.
