The FINANCIAL — Melbourne Airport achieved an increase of 8 per cent international growth for the first quarter of the new financial year compared to last year, to reach 8.5 million passengers.

During the quarter, Melbourne Airport continued to see strong international passenger growth with the growing Asian region continuing its dominance as five countries, including China, the Philippines and Malaysia all achieving more than 10 per cent growth.

More traditional markets, including the United States, Canada and New Zealand, also all grew by more than 10 per cent compared to the same period as last year, according to Melbourne Airport.

In August, Tigerair commenced operations from the new Terminal 4 with the staged opening to continue as Jetstar and Regional Express officially also move into the new terminal in November.

Due to open in the coming weeks, the new transport hub will provide passengers with an undercover drop-off and pick-up area as well as a new ‘At terminal T4’ car park.

In September, Melbourne Airport also welcomed Mr Lyell Strambi as its new CEO.

For the month of September, international passengers increased by 9 per cent and domestic passengers increased by 3 per cent compared to the same month last year.

Quotes attributable to Mr Lyell Strambi, CEO Melbourne Airport:

“Melbourne Airport’s continuing strong international growth is evidence that our facility upgrades and expansions are helping us to meet the needs of our customers and passengers. We also know there is no room for complacency – about our facilities, people or service standards – and we’ll be doing the right things, and doing them well, to make the most of the wonderful asset that is Melbourne Airport”.

“I am proud to have joined an organisation that represents Melbourne and Victoria to the world. Melbourne Airport has certainly changed since I started my aviation career and I am looking forward to working with our customers, the government, industry and our local community members to give passengers and airlines even more reasons to choose Victoria and Melbourne Airport.
