The FINANCIAL — Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Giorgi Chikovani together with the Head of the International Department of the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, Morten Johnsen, the Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture Nino Tandilashvili, the NEA Director Tamar Bagratia, the Rector of the Technical University of Georgia, Archil Prangishvili and the Head of Human Resources Management and Organizational Development Department Mikheil Zibzibadze signed the Memorandum of Institutional Cooperation.
Within the framework of the Memorandum, the Kingdom of Norway will assist Georgia to promote development of renewable energy sources, develop a normative base and prepare qualified personnel. For this purpose, Norway has allocated a grant of $ 4 million to Georgia, which will be available for the next four years, according to Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia.
“We have established a close cooperation with Norway. The role of Norwegian investments within the development of Georgia’s hydropower potential is immense. The largest energy projects in Georgia – the Adjaristskali HPP and the Namakhvani HPP – are being implemented under the Norwegian investments. These projects play an important role in strengthening our country’s energy security. I am glad that further deepening and development of the relations in the energy sector is actively posed in the agendas of our countries. The financial support and experience of the Norwegian Kingdom helps us to successfully accomplish the tasks we face in the EU’s energy family,” – Giorgi Chikovani stated.
With this grant, students of the Georgian Technical University will undertake MA programs in Hydro-engineering at the Technical University of Trondheim, Norway. The first flow of students will travel to Norway this year.
In addition, five short-term qualification courses will be conducted for several public agencies operating in the energy sector of Georgia, such as the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, LEPL National Environmental Agency and JSC Georgian State Electrosystem.
