The FINANCIAL — RIO DE JANEIRO, A memorial in remembrance of the victims of an Airbus A330 crash over the Atlantic in June has opened in Rio de Janeiro, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported on November 8.
Air France Flight 447 en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris crashed into the Atlantic on June 1 killing all 228 people on board. The crash is the worst in the airline's 75-year history, and the world's worst for almost a decade.
The monument is made of a panel of glass, engraved with 228 swallows to symbolize the number of victims. It was installed in a park in Rio's Leblon neighborhood, which has one of the most impressing views of the Atlantic Ocean.
The private ceremony was attended by representatives of Air France, the French government and relatives of the deceased. Many of them wore black armbands to urge more transparency in the investigation of the crash.
