The FINANCIAL — Responsibility, higher education, attentiveness and self confidence were named the key factors in being successful at work by the HR managers interviewed by The FINANCIAL.
They consider appearance an important factor that can really help one to succeed in one’s career as well. Experts say men have a better chance of getting promoted. “The fact is that in the business world there are more successful men than women,” said the experts. The FINANCIAL investigated the secret to success.
“In order to be successful, an employee should not disappoint their manager and should always realise their employer’s hopes in them,” said Tamuna Lasurashvili, professional HR Manager.
“They must gain the trust of all staff members, have a good relationship with co-workers, help them when necessary, provide and also get sufficient information from them. They must be an honest worker, punctual, and always complete their assigned tasks on time. It is very important for an employee to have good time management in order to be in control over their work and meet deadlines,” Lasurashvili explained.
“If an employee really wants to be successful he must have self-confidence, a high sense of responsibility, do his/her best when accomplishing tasks, be very attentive, active and never give up. But what is most important – an employee must love their job,” Lasurashvili said.
Another HR Manager, Lika Bichnigauri says the main determining factor for achieving success in one’s career is one’s personal skills. To be successful an employee should focus on: Building credibility – one should always try to become trusted, to make people have confidence in you; Effective time management – one should be practical and efficient when planning tasks. You could be working more than 40 hours per week but always make sure you value your and others’
free time.
“Providing help for others – this is one of the main tips that ranks high in becoming successful. When you see someone struggling with something, you will never go wrong if you lend a hand to assist them. This is building your success on others’ success by making them successful. Being on time – many opportunities are clinched by people through being available as opportunities increase by being “on time”. Providing something extra than what is expected – this builds high expectations and innovative thinking for new solutions from you,” Bichnigauri said.
“Talent, hard work and luck are the main determiners of success at work. Education has quite a big influence on a worker’s career as well,” Lili Bibilashvili, Head of HR Department JSC Nikora and Director of HR Department of Caucasus University, told The FINANCIAL.
According to the HR managers interviewed by The FINANCIAL, appearance is one of the most important factors in the workplace.
“Appearance creates an impression of us. For example, when recruiting an employee, during the interview, the first impression is made by the candidates’ visual appearance and only after that do you consider other factors,” Lasurashvili said.
“Appearance is very influential especially when an employee has to work and communicate with people outside the company. He/she becomes the face of the company, a representative of it. If he/she looks irrelevant, he/she should not hope to be successful, get great opportunities and become a good manager,” Lasurashvili said.
“One’s appearance really matters as a first impression, especially when the interview can last for a long time. A person with a pleasant appearance and nice clothing encourages you to communicate. It is almost one whole step forward to being successful. But a good appearance must of course be supported by correct answers during the interview,” Bichnigauri said.
“A good appearance means increased sales for the company. However it doesn’t mean that a person who doesn’t have a pleasant appearance won’t be hired or become successful at work,” she noted.
According to Lasurashvili, one should try to take the personal responsibility that has been assigned to him/her and should also strive for excellence in order to achieve success at work.
“The fact is that in the business world there are more successful men than women. So it means that men somehow have greater achievements. The reasons are different: people’s general perception of man is that he is stronger, more powerful, with better mental ability and reliable, therefore men and women often find themselves in unequal working conditions,” Bichnigauri said.
“The average male employee is always able to better present himself and his abilities, and do a greater job for the employer, because his assigned tasks are almost always more significant and meaningful and need special skills and background. People do not usually give those sorts of chances to women, they just assume that men can do it better! When recruiting someone to key positions, an employer always gives preferences to men rather than women, regardless of them having the same or even a better background,” Bichnigauri noted.
According to Lasurashvili, the reality in Georgia is that regarding our culture and style of life, for centuries men have always been the ones financially supporting their family. Although over the last two decades the political and economic crisis roughly changed the situation. This made women become more active and take on more responsibility.
“Today, in comparison to the last two decade there are more women who desire higher positions at work and achieve success,” Lasurashvili said.
Lili Bibilashvili says that women have another crucial mission in work; to look after their family and children and that is why it is sometimes hard to be successful at work alongside a family life. However despite this, today there are many successful women working in top positions in different companies.
