The FINANCIAL — On 18 February 2016, Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze held an introductory meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada to Georgia (with residence in Ankara) John Holmes, according to MFA of Georgia.
Discussions focused on co-operation in the spheres of policy, economy, defence and security, education, culture and people-to-people contacts; on the importance of high-level bilateral visits and meetings; and on the enhancement of trade-economic and investment relations between Georgia and Canada.
Mikheil Janelidze informed John Holmes on Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration agenda, focusing on the current situation in Georgia’s occupied territories and on the security environment in the region.
Later on a working meeting between Georgian First Deputy Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani and John Holmes was held. Talking points included the importance of carrying out bilateral co-operation and holding the next round of political consultations.
David Zalkaliani and John Holmes spoke about the current situation in the region, Georgia’s role in the implementation of the regional transport and economic projects, the existing business environment in the region. David Zalkaliani underlined the importance of Canada’s participation in the Tbilisi Silk Road Forum due to be held in 2016.
The two sides also underlined the importance of political support for Georgia and involvement of partners in ensuring tangible results at the NATO Summit in Warsaw, discussed the possible projects in the defence, educational and humanitarian spheres and agreed to intensify co-operation with a view to realizing these projects.
John Holmes reaffirmed Canada’s unequivocal support for Georgia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, European and Euro-Atlantic integration and democratic reforms.
