The FINANCIAL — On 11 April 2016, Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze met the Co-chairs of the Economic, Energy, and Trade Working Group under the Georgia-U.S. Charter on Strategic Partnership – Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Tong and Assistant Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Thomas Melia.
The meeting from the U.S. side was also attended by Science and Technology Adviser to the Secretary of State Vaughan Turekian, and from the Georgian side – by First Deputy Foreign Minister Davit Zalkaliani and Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Genadi Arveladze, according to MFA of Georgia.
Discussions focused on a broad spectrum of bilateral trade-economic relations and prospects for the further strengthening of co-operation between the two countries in terms of boosting trade and investments. Special mention was made of the importance to advance co-operation in the areas of science and technologies. The sides also stressed the need to promote the projects ongoing in the Georgian regions in the light of European and Euro-Atlantic integration.
The U.S. delegation highly appreciated the progress Georgia has achieved in terms of carrying out economic reforms, reaffirming the U.S. Government’s full support for Georgia and its role as a trade, transport and logistics hub. Mikheil Janelidze updated the members of the U.S. delegation on the Georgian Prime Minister’s four-point reform plan.
On a closing note, the sides expressed the hope that the forthcoming meeting of the Economic, Energy, and Trade Working Group under the Georgia-U.S. Charter on Strategic Partnership due to take place on 12 April will have a successful outcome. Discussions during the meeting will deal with reforms oriented towards economic growth in Georgia, development of business, as well as promotion of innovations and technologies. Participants of the meeting will discuss trade-economic relations between Georgia and the U.S., as well as bilateral and regional investment projects. Special attention will be paid to prospects for co-operation in the areas of energy and environmental protection. Special emphasis, in terms of regional integration, will also be put on the New Silk Road Initiative and the role of Georgia as a transit and logistics hub.
The format of the meeting envisages outlining prospects for bilateral co-operation in the areas of economy, energy, agriculture and environment.
