The FINANCIAL — On 26 May 2016, Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze held a meeting with Speaker of the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia Ināra Mūrniece, who will attend the festive events dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the restoration of Georgia’s independence. She also participated in the tenth international conference on Defence and Security.
Mikheil Janelidze underlined the importance of the partner countries’ support for the success of Georgia and thanked the Speaker of the Saeima for the visit of the Latvian delegation to Georgia on such an important day. Ināra Mūrniece, for her part, congratulated Georgia on the 25th anniversary of the restoration of independence and reaffirmed the Latvian Government’s support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for its European and Euro-Atlantic integration.
The Georgian Foreign Minister and the Speaker of the Latvian Parliament spoke about Georgia’s European integration and visa liberalization process. Mikheil Janelidze emphasised that the Latvian Parliament was among the first to ratify the EU-Georgia Association Agreement, which will enter into force on 1 July 2016. Ināra Mūrniece underlined that Georgia fulfilled its homework effectively and now it is up to the European Union to make a decision on granting visa-free travel to Georgian citizens.
Discussions during the meeting focused on the security situation in Georgia’s occupied territories and the threats and challenges related thereto, according to MFA of Georgia.
