The FINANCIAL — On 10 May 2016, Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze met Thomas Hammarberg, an independent expert on human rights, according to MFA of Georgia.
Thomas Hammarberg, as an independent Senior Expert, commissioned by the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia Herbert Salber will assess the human rights situation in the occupied region of Abkhazia, for which he will pay several visits to Georgia.
During the meeting, the Georgian Foreign Minister acquainted the expert with the Georgian Government’s policy towards peaceful resolution of the conflict and meeting the needs of the conflict-affected population. Mikheil Janelidze paid special attention to the grave humanitarian and human rights situation in the occupied Abkhazian region.
On 9 May 2016, Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister David Dondua also held a meeting with Thomas Hammarberg. The meeting was attended by First Deputy State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality Ketevan Tsikhelashvili and Deputy Minister of Justice Gocha Lortkipanidze.
Within the framework of the visit, Thomas Hammarberg will meet representatives of the Georgian Government and civil society. The expert will explore the humanitarian and human rights situation in Abkhaiza, after which he is due to prepare a report on the human rights situation in Abkhazia for the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia. The mission serves humanitarian goals and is held in line with the EU’s non-recognition and engagement policy.
