The FINANCIAL — The Georgian Foreign Minister received the Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Abdul Latif Bin Rashid Al Zayani.
The sides spoke about Georgia’s successful co-operation with the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf. According to the Georgian Foreign Minister, Georgia takes a close interest in developing its ties with the Arab countries, and the increasing number of Georgian embassies to the GCC region is a clear proof of this interest. Currently Georgia has its embassies to Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia and successfully co-operates with the Arab countries of the Gulf in such areas as economy, people-to-people contacts, tourism, air transport, culture and education.
It was emphasized that the Gulf States are interested in Georgia’s investment potential, to which attests an increasing number of Arab companies operating in the Georgian market. The sides expressed their readiness to further develop trade and business relations in the future.
The sides underlined the growing flow of tourists from the Arab countries to Georgia. In 2016, about 60 929 Arabian tourists arrived in Georgia. This positive dynamic is further supported by the active involvement of the Gulf airlines in the Georgian market. Another company – Gulf Air is due to enter the Georgian market from June 2017.
The sides also spoke about the situation in the Middle East – Syria, Iraq and Yemen emphasizing the necessity of strengthening international effort against terrorism, according to MFA of Georgia.
At the end of the meeting, the Minister and the Secretary General signed Memorandum of Understanding on the Mechanism of Consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia and the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf.
