The FINANCIAL — On August 23, a blast at the Kirov coalmine (Makiivka, Donetsk region) killed eight miners and injured another twelve, Ukrainian News has learned from Marina Nikitina, press secretary for the Industrial Safety Committee's territorial division in Donetsk region.
"It is now not known what caused the explosion, a special commission is investigating circumstances of the accident," Nikitina said.
In her words, the blast occurred at 2:20 p.m. at a depth of 110 meters when they were carrying out assembly works at a development district on the first eastern longwall face of the N10 "Upper" bed.
At the moment of explosion coal was not extracted at the district.
Two days before the accident deputy head of the Donetsk-Makiivka state regional inspectorate of the Industrial Safety Committee examined the Kirov mine, Nikitina stressed hereto.
"Methane content recorded during the examination did not exceed 0.3% [with allowable 1%]," Nikitina remarked.
She also said that during the first shift, from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m., the mine performed scheduled reversing of the air stream.
After that, the explosion occurred at the mine at 2:20 p.m.
In that moment 141 workers were on the site of the accident.
The standalone enterprise Kirov Coalmine is part of the public enterprise MakiivVuhillia, it was commissioned in 1947.
Project capacity of mine is 600,000 tons of coal annually.
It delivers coal of K and T grades.
The mine is listed as instant methane outburst hazardous.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, MakiivVuhillia includes seven coalmines: Kholodna Balka, Lenin Mine, Chaikino, Butovksaya, Kirov Mine, Yasinovskaya-Hlubokaya, Severnaya, Bazhanov Mine, as well as supplementary departments and subdivisions.
