The FINANCIAL — In 2015, the wheat harvest volumes in Moldova totaled 920 thsd tonnes, a decrease of 15% compared with the last year level, but the index exceeded the average level for five recent years.
The qualitative indices of wheat became much better in the current year, and feed grain volumes will be quite sufficient for development of the livestock sector, declared Ion Sula, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry of the Republic of Moldova, according to APK Inform.
According to him, the food security sector in Moldova requires 340 thsd tonnes of milling wheat per year. The Minister stressed that in the current year milling wheat volumes cover nearly 65% of the general wheat harvest, while last year its share totaled 40%.
I.Sula informed that the average grain yield totaled 2.8 t/ha, which is a good result, taking into account the weather conditions last autumn and in the current year spring.
Also, I.Sula noted that in 2015, Moldova plans to export 350-400 thsd tonnes of the grain to the Arab countries, Turkey and the EU. To date, Moldova mainly exports wheat to the UK and Italy.
