The FINANCIAL — Moldovan and Georgian members of the “Covenant of Mayors East” initiative learned how to improve their energy and climate policies and write Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAPs) at a specialised training in the Georgian town of Telavi on 25-26 April.
The main goal of the training was to help the towns to improve their knowledge of and capacity to evaluate vulnerability to climate change, and to monitor and report on reductions in CO2 emissions, in line with their Covenant of Mayors East engagements. They learned about the latest technologies in the area of energy efficiency, renewable energy and climate change mitigation.
The Covenant of Mayors East helps municipalities to prepare and implement Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans, reducing dependency on fossil fuels, improving the security of energy supply, and allowing them to contribute more actively to climate change mitigation, according to the EU Neighbours portal.
The Covenant of Mayors East is part of the EU4Energy initiative. EU4Energy covers all EU support to improve energy supply, security and connectivity, as well as to promote energy efficiency and the use of renewables in the Eastern Partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine). It does this by financing projects and programmes that help to reform energy markets and to reduce national energy dependence and consumption. Over the long term, this makes energy supply more reliable, transparent and affordable, thus reducing energy poverty and energy bills for both citizens and the private sector.
