The FINANCIAL — The British low cost carrier Monarch Airlines is setting up operations at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, with three new routes to the UK.
As early as April 28, 2017, the British carrier Monarch Airlines will inaugurate service from Stockholm Arlanda on three new UK routes, to Manchester, Birmingham and London Luton.
All three routes will have year-round service. There will be three weekly flights to Manchester and Birmingham, while flights to London Luton will be twice a week. Birmingham and London Luton are brand-new destinations from Stockholm Arlanda.
“Demand for flights from Stockholm to the UK has increased significantly in recent years. The new routes with Monarch Airlines make the country even more accessible for Swedes. Timetables for the three routes are perfect for discovering these British destinations, for instance, over a long weekend. Non-stop service to London Luton means not just an opportunity to get to London easily but also faster access to Cambridge and Oxford,” says Elizabeth Axtelius, director of Aviation Business at Swedavia.
The non-stop service to Manchester will be especially appealing to Swedish football fans. That is because Zlatan Ibrahimovic now plays for Manchester United, and the contest with the team’s local competitor, Manchester City, is exciting, according to Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
Monarch Airlines is a strong brand that is well established in the UK, and it is hoped that the new routes will attract a large number of new British tourists to Stockholm next summer.
“Monarch is delighted to be operating in Sweden for the first time with new routes from Birmingham, London Luton and Manchester. In recent years, we have expanded our network and started flying to a number of new cities that are ideal for short holidays and city breaks. We look forward to offering our customers the opportunity to visit the beautiful city of Stockholm and to welcoming visitors from Sweden to London, Birmingham and Manchester,” says Ian Chambers, Acting Chief Commercial Officer.
Monarch’s investment in direct routes to Stockholm Arlanda is further evidence that the big low cost carriers are setting up operations at Stockholm Arlanda Airport to an ever greater extent. This is in line with Stockholm’s efforts to be Scandinavia’s leading airport.
