The FINANCIAL — MPs are set to discuss the impact of air passenger duty (APD) on inbound tourism in a Parliamentary debate on 1 November.
As Caterer and Hotelkeeper announced, it will be an important day for hospitality in the House of Commons as MPs will also discuss the Beer Duty Escalator on that date.
The debate on APD comes as the Treasury faces growing calls from MPs for a study into the economic impact of the tax.
A motion put forward by MPs Henry Smith and Priti Patel calls on the Treasury to "to freeze air passenger duty while this study is being carried out and to use the evidence from the study to reform air passenger duty so that it is internationally competitive and supports economic growth, investment and jobs."
Concern about high levels of APD has grown among tourism trade bodies and hoteliers, who have warned that it has helped to widen the tourism deficit and could hamper Government plans to attract 40 million visitors to the UK by 2020.
