VIENNA. The new OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Audronius Ažubalis, will present the Lithuanian Chairmanship's priorities at the OSCE Permanent Council on January 13.
These priorities include contributing to progress to resolve the protracted conflicts, enhancing the Organization's efforts in tackling transnational treats in the OSCE area, advancing freedom of the media, promoting tolerance through education, developing common principles in the field of energy security and promoting co-operation at the regional level. Ažubalis will also discuss developments concerning the OSCE presence in Belarus.
Lithuania took over the OSCE Chairmanship on 1 January from Kazakhstan. Ireland will hold the OSCE Chairmanship in 2012.
The Permanent Council is one of the 56-country OSCE's main regular decision-making bodies. It convenes weekly in Vienna to discuss developments in the OSCE area and to make appropriate decisions.
