The FINANCIAL — The best place to get a graduate degree in accounting is right here in Austin, according to the U.S. News & World Report’s 2016 edition of Best Graduate Schools, released on March 11.
In addition to giving the University of Texas at Austin’s accounting program a top ranking, four UT graduate schools — School of Nursing (No. 13), School of Law (No. 15), College of Education (No. 10) and Cockrell School of Engineering (No. 10) — were ranked among the top 15 in the nation.
The graduate rankings are considered some of the most prestigious in higher education. Rankings are determined based on a variety of criteria, including standardized test scores of newly enrolled students and employment outcomes of graduates, which are measured differently across disciplines to account for differences in the programs, according to the University of Texas at Austin.
An additional 49 specialty graduate programs at UT ranked among the nation’s best. UT also has several other graduate schools that remain nationally ranked according to U.S. News & World Report data from 2012-2014.
Beyond the school rankings, UT’s individual graduate disciplines and specialty programs are consistently ranked highly, too. Ten graduate programs are among the top five in the country, and five of those are based on rankings from the most recent report:
Accounting (McCombs School of Business) — No. 1
Information Systems (McCombs School of Business) — No. 3
Administration/Supervision (College of Education) — No. 3
Special Education (College of Education) — No. 4
Civil Engineering (Cockrell School of Engineering) — No. 3
Despite cuts in state funding over the past decade, and a recent 1 percent national drop in first-time graduate school enrollment UT continues to maintain, and in some cases, improve its rankings. It’s a testament to the University’s “remarkable breadth and depth,” said University of Texas at Austin President Bill Powers in a release.
“I’m tremendously proud of our graduate programs and the students, faculty, and administrators who make them the centers of excellence they are.”
