The FINANCIAL — According to RIA Novosti, New York authorities are holding Computer Recycling Day on January 3 in a bid to help New Yorkers unload old computers free of charge and stimulate the development of environmentally-friendly technology.
Computer Recycling Day is held in New York once every year as part of the program to help the city switch to environmentally-clean technologies and reduce pollution.
On Computer Recycling Day, New Yorkers are encouraged to get rid of old computers, TV sets and other home electronics at specially designated places.
It is prohibited to unload used computers and other electronics at garbage sites in New York City and 11 more states in the U.S. because they contain dangerous elements, such as cadmium and mercury.
Some U.S. computer producers, such as Apple and Dell, accept their used electronic media for free.
The U.S. authorities have recycled 48 million metric tons of used electronic media since 2004.
