The FINANCIAL — NIB and the City of Mikkeli have signed a loan agreement totalling EUR 20 million with a tenor of 25 years to finance a new wastewater treatment plant in eastern Finland.
The new Metsä-Sairila wastewater treatment plant will be constructed in underground caverns. It will be the first facility in Finland applying membrane bioreactor technology, which is proven to increase the efficiency and quality of the treatment process, according to NIB.
The new wastewater plant is expected to begin operating in 2020, and will then replace the Kenkäveronniemi wastewater treatment plant. Mikkeli Waterworks is managing the project.
Mikkeli Waterworks will also manage the construction of a 4.5-kilometre transmission sewer from Kenkäveronniemi to Metsä-Sairila, a 4.1-kilometre discharge pipeline and a 0.7-kilometre emergency discharge pipeline from Metsä-Sairila to Finland’s largest lake, Saimaa.
Mikkeli Waterworks is fully-owned by the City of Mikkeli and responsible for producing drinking water and treating wastewater for about 55,000 inhabitants in the city and its surrounding areas.
