The FINANCIAL — Tokyo stocks ended marginally higher January 17, with the Nikkei Stock Average climbing 3.82 points, or 0.04%, from Friday's close to 10,502.86, according to Nikkei.com.
Gains on Wall Street late last week, driven by strong earnings at major U.S. companies, encouraged buying on the local bourse. A pause in the yen's rise against the dollar provided further support.
But a plunge in Shanghai stock prices — following an announcement Friday by the People's Bank of China to raise the reserve-requirement ratio for banks — weighed on Tokyo stocks and sparked a sell-off in the afternoon.
