The FINANCIAL — Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) on July 13 announced a $2.9 million contract with the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC – The Reliable One) to provide a suite of dispatch consoles, control stations and portable and mobile radios for a new radio system utilizing Orange County's existing Motorola Smartzone(TM) interoperable network.
By using the existing county network infrastructure, OUC, one of Florida's largest municipal utilities, will reduce costs while improving communications with a fully interoperable system.
"As a leader in wireless communications for enterprises and public safety, Motorola truly understands the specific requirements for the situations and environments we encounter on a daily basis," said Joe Reilly, manager of communication systems for OUC. "In addition to the importance of providing a cost-effective solution, Motorola recognized the need to support future network growth and designed a solution to meet our needs as they expand over time."
As part of the agreement, OUC will deploy eight Motorola CENTRACOM(R) Gold Elite consoles, 15 control stations and a combination of 700 digital portable and mobile radios. The Gold Elite dispatch consoles, which will be installed at OUC's Pershing Dispatch Center and two remote locations, provide communications between two-way radios, telephones and auxiliary resources.
"Motorola's communications solutions have a proven track record of meeting the needs of critical public safety and municipal organizations," said Rich Steiner, supervisor of communications for Orange County. "The increased coverage area and interoperability between OUC and Orange County will play a significant role in improving our ability to communicate across agencies, while the additional features and functionality will help to strengthen the county's core systems."
Motorola's Gold Elite consoles can be easily customized, giving dispatchers the tools they need to manage data more productively. The Motorola consoles and portable and mobile radios are part of the MOTOA4(TM) mission critical portfolio of products that offer seamless connectivity and real-time information in the hands of users. Motorola's broad portfolio of mission critical radios and networks deliver advanced voice and data with industry-leading reliability.
A number of different digital radios were required to meet the unique needs of OUC. As part of the agreement, Motorola will deliver 200 XTL2500(R) dash-mount mobile radios, 50 XTL2500(R) remote-mount mobile radios and 450 XTS2500(R) portable radios. Each of the radios will operate on the Orange County Motorola Smartzone network, which meets mission critical public safety requirements for day-to-day operations and emergency responses.
"Motorola's dispatch consoles and radios will provide OUC with seamless connectivity and access to real-time information using mission critical technology on the Orange County Motorola Smartzone network that is second nature," said Marshall Wright, Motorola Sales and Service Inc. vice president. "With the new system in place, OUC will have the ability to communicate with the various public safety agencies throughout the region and in a very cost-effective and efficient manner."
