The FINANCIAL — Jake Wetzel, an alumnus of the Saïd Business School, was a member of the Canadian crew that won the Rowing Men’s Eight at the Beijing Olympics on 17 August. The crew took an early lead and held off the British and American teams to win the 2,000-metre race comfortably in 5 minutes 24 seconds.
Jake comments: “I will never forget the feeling after the first 15 strokes of the race when I was absolutely confident that we were going to win. After narrowly losing the gold in Athens in 2004, it means so much to me have become Olympic Champion. The year that I spent at the Saïd Business School and rowing in the Blue Boat was pivotal for me in terms of setting up my career and launching this Olympic campaign.” Jake was a member of the MSc in Financial Economics class from 2005-06.
George Bridgewater, a member of the incoming Oxford MBA class for 2008-09, won a bronze medal for New Zealand in the men’s pairs on 16 August.
