Strasbourg, 27.06.2025 – The monitoring rapporteurs for Georgia of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Edite Estrela (Portugal, SOC) and Sabine Ćudić (Bosnia and Herzegovina, ALDE), have expressed their deep concern at the politically-motivated prosecution of opposition members and civil society representatives in Georgia.
“We join the representatives of all political groups in yesterday’s current affairs debate in the Assembly in calling for the immediate release of all persons subjected to politically-motivated persecution in Georgia. These prosecutions and the abuse of legal procedures to silence opposition and dissent should end. They are incompatible with a democratic society,” said the co-rapporteurs.
As part of their efforts to reverse the democratic backsliding in Georgia and to engage in an open dialogue with all stakeholders in the country to ensure full respect for Georgia’s membership obligations to the Council of Europe, the co-rapporteurs intend to make a fact-finding visit to the country in the autumn of this year.
