The FINANCIAL — Following her visit to Turkey in May 2015, Josette Durrieu (France, SOC), PACE rapporteur for post-monitoring dialogue with this country, has praised the great political maturity demonstrated by the Turkish people in the parliamentary elections in June 2015 and the increased representativeness of the Turkish parliament.
In an information note declassified on 26 June, she also voiced concern regarding the separation of powers, the independence of the judiciary and freedom of expression, in particular the application and interpretation of the latest restrictive security laws relating to the Internet and internal security. She condemned the pressures on the media (especially of an economic nature) for helping to create a climate of mistrust, according to PACE.
Ms Durrieu therefore urged Turkey, a strategic partner for Europe, to continue its reforms, including revision of the constitution and the process to settle the Kurdish issue, in the context of the post-monitoring dialogue. She has also praised Turkey’s outstanding efforts in dealing with over 2 million Syrian refugees.
