The FINANCIAL — BISHKEK, An earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale has killed at least 58 people in southern Kyrgyzstan, Kyrgyzstan's emergency situations ministry said on October 6.
The earthquake struck the Central Asian country near the densely populated border area Tajikistan on October 5, also injuring another 50 people and destroying some 120 buildings.
"We are continuing rescue operations to find out if anyone remains buried under the debris," said an emergencies ministry spokesman.
Kyrgyzstan was hit by a series of strong quakes in January and in December 2007. Although a number of buildings were destroyed in the quakes, which reached 6.5 on the Richter scale, no one was killed.
