The FINANCIAL — On 13 July 2015, presentation of a draft report of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) was held at the Georgian Foreign Ministry.
Along with officials of the Georgian Government, the meeting was attended by representatives of Public Defender’s Office, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, UN Development Programme, EU/CoE Joint Project – Support to the Georgian Bar Association, Human Rights Training and Monitoring Centre, Georgia’s Reforms Associates’ (GRASS).
Within the framework of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) initiated by the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC), Georgia is due to present its human rights report by 20 July 2015. The UPR is a new and unique mechanism which aims to improve the human rights situation in the EU member states, according to MFA Georgia.
The Georgian Foreign Ministry started preparation of the report already at the beginning of 2014. At the initial stage, an inter-agency working group was set up in coordination with the Ministry. A special training was held in Kachreti, on 25 and 26 November 2015, for members of the working group, which was organized jointly by the Georgian Foreign Ministry and the United Nations Development Programme in Georgia.
The report preparation process was coordinated by the Georgian Foreign Ministry and involved all the three branches of the government. The Foreign Ministry closely cooperation with the non-governmental sector as well. In 2015, the Georgian Foreign Ministry, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the non-governmental organization – GRASS organized several meetings with representatives of the non-governmental sector.
