The FINANCIAL — President Viktor Yuschenko estimates situation at the grain market as critical, president's press secretary Iryna Vannikova has told a news briefing.
"The President of Ukraine is too concerned about the critical state of affairs at the grain market," she said.
As to Vannikova, the Cabinet of Ministers failed to provide settlement of adequate prices for commodity grains, that is why farmers were compelled to sell grains at understated prices.
In particular, as to the press secretary, for the recent week the price of class III wheat fell by more than UAH 100 per ton to UAH 850-900 per ton, for the recent fortnight the price of barley went down UAH 200 per ton to UAH 450-500 per ton.
The head of state stressed, because of scarce finance the Agrarian Fund fell down to perform its function of stabilising the situation at the grain market.
"The Agrarian Fund of Ukraine is still unable to fulfill its function to keep the market stable," Vannikova emphasized.
She went on saying the government policy of external grains outlet markets to be a failure: existing markets being lost and no more new markets developed.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, crops will be gathered on an area of some 27 million hectares in 2009, 12.9 million hectares under early crops, including 6.8 million hectares of wheat, 4.9 million hectares of barley, 0.5 million hectare of rye.
The Agrarian Policy Ministry expects the grain harvest of 42-43 million tons in 2009.
